The Scheme Co-ordinator contacts every victim of burglary aged 60 and over. If they wish a visit, the two Scheme Security Advisors respond as promptly as possible, usually within 48 hours, assess the security, fit high quality security devices that meet the victim’s needs i.e. door chains, window alarms, memo minders etc. This service is free to victims. They do not aim to turn a home into a fortress but they will provide practical help, reassurance and peace of mind at a time when it is needed most, usually within 48 hours of the burglary.

The Scheme offers the same service on a proactive basis to anyone aged 65 and over to reduce the chance of them becoming victims and reduce their fear of crime. This service is also offered to disabled vulnerable adults of any age. Non victims are asked for a donation of £30 towards the costs The advisors also fit key safes at a cost of £50 or £80 for the Supra C500, allowing carers etc. to gain access to residents with little mobility, but who wish to stay in their own homes and live independently in their community. Many of these are arranged through the Care package and Discharge units at the hospitals, but referrals are taken from anyone who requires the service.

The Scheme receives proactive referrals from older people and from a wide range of partner agencies. The Bobby advisors assess any additional needs identified when they visit and refer to other agencies as appropriate. This joined up approach with other agencies ensures that the most appropriate and relevant services are provided.

We actively promote the scheme by giving talks and attend community events. If any group would like a talk about our work contact us on 01480 413311 or email info@the bobbyscheme.org

Our Partnership with Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service
We have teamed up with the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue service on a joint community safety initiative. The aim of the project is to improve the safety of older and vulnerable residents in the county.
As well as carrying out home security on all of our visits, the two security advisors will also deliver Home Fire Safety checks, fit smoke detectors and complete the fire assessment checklists.

Last year in 2015 the scheme helped 613 elderly victims of crime, 506 elderly people who felt at risk and 276 domestic abuse victims. We also fitted 246 key safes.
